SMS Disclosure
Effective June 10, 2026
Who sends these messages
Messages come from The Tartan, operated by Calverda LLC, 169 Madison Ave STE 15023, New York, NY 10016. SMS messages are delivered through Twilio Inc., our messaging provider, from a US toll-free number associated with our account.
How opt-in works
SMS is optional. You sign in to The Tartan with a one-time code sent to your email, and every feature works without SMS. Opting into SMS is a separate, voluntary choice and is never required to create an account, join an event, or use the service. Account signup does not ask for a phone number at all.
The only place to opt in is your account settings (Settings → Notifications), which you reach by your own choice — nothing in the product directs you there. On that screen you enter your mobile number and check an unchecked consent checkbox below the full message disclosure; the submit button stays disabled until you do both. Only when you submit do we record your opt-in and begin sending SMS. We store the timestamp, your IP address, your browser’s user agent, and the exact disclosure text shown at the moment you consented, so we can prove the opt-in was explicit and informed. A public reproduction of that screen is available without an account at thetartan.app/sms-optin.
The Tartan does not send marketing messages, promotional offers, or third-party content over SMS, and your number is not shared with third parties for marketing.
Verbatim consent disclosure
The block below is the exact text shown next to the unchecked consent checkbox on the opt-in screen. It is sourced from the same module the opt-in screen renders, so the wording on this page and the wording at the moment of consent are guaranteed to match. The disclosure version stamp is recorded on every consent submission for replay.
“By providing your mobile number and checking this box, you agree to receive recurring SMS messages from The Tartan (operated by Calverda LLC), including one-time sign-in codes and event reminders such as round start times, tee-time assignments, and schedule changes. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe, HELP for help. Consent is not a condition of purchase or of using The Tartan. See Privacy Policy (https://thetartan.app/privacy) and Terms (https://thetartan.app/terms). We do not sell or share your mobile number or opt-in data with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes.”
The phone-number input sits above the disclosure block; the consent checkbox is unchecked and sits directly below it; the submit button is disabled until the user enters a valid mobile number and checks the box. No checkbox is pre-selected.
Message types you may receive
SMS from The Tartan carries only two kinds of message:
- One-time sign-in codes, sent only when you request to sign in by text (otherwise codes are emailed).
- Event reminders for events you have joined — round start times, tee-time assignments, and schedule changes.
Everything else in The Tartan — scoring, standings, and all other activity — stays in the app and its in-app inbox. It is never sent over SMS.
Sample messages
Your The Tartan verification code is: 482913
The Tartan: Reminder — Round 1 at Quail Hollow starts at 9:00 AM tomorrow. Reply STOP to opt out.
The Tartan: Schedule change — your Saturday tee time moved from 9:10 AM to 9:40 AM. Reply STOP to opt out.
How often we send
Message frequency varies. Sign-in codes arrive only when you request one. Event reminders are tied to events you have joined — around an event day you may receive a few reminders; outside of an event window you may receive none. The Tartan does not schedule outbound campaigns.
Opting out — STOP
You can opt out of all The Tartan SMS at any time by replying STOP to any message. Aliases including STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, and QUIT are also honored. After you opt out you will receive a single carrier confirmation message and then no further SMS from The Tartan; the opt-out also revokes your prior consent record. Replying START or UNSTOP clears the carrier-level block, but to begin receiving messages again you must opt in again from your account settings.
You can also revoke your SMS opt-in at any time in the app under Settings → Notifications, which removes your number, or fine-tune which reminders reach you while keeping in-app notifications on.
